This course gives you opportunities to explore concepts learned in Introduction to Art & Design with a broader range of materials and methods. We will be diving into a deeper study of drawing, composition, painting, mixed media, and printmaking. Assignments are designed to encourage you to experiment with and discover multiple solutions to a single problem. You will be responsible for your own answers, but will also be given opportunities to have conversations with the peers in the classroom. You will observe and discuss various kinds of two-dimensional work, including your own work and pieces from art history.

Classroom Dynamics
This class meets twice a week. Class time focuses on developing your observational skills and fluency in different materials. We complete one or two major projects per grading term, always followed by a class discussion or critique. There are smaller projects that are designed to help support a bigger project, and those are usually completed in class. There will also be sketchbook pages assigned every month to keep exercising your drawing muscles outside of class. Due to budget restraints this year, this class has a $30 lab fee. If you are unable to pay this fee, please see me in private. In addition to the fee I require you to have a sketchbook that is NO SMALLER THAN 5”x9”. An art store suggestion is Dick Blick Art Materials, at the Landmark Center in Boston, near Fenway Park, 401 Park Drive.

GradingMost of this course’s work will be completed during class time, therefore, attendance and promptness to class is critical to your success. Your grade will be heavily weighed on your effort and thoughtfulness behind your work. I grade on personal progress, care for the classroom and supplies, and kindness to your peers. I do not grade on pure ability. We are here to create a safe environment for exploration and discovery. My goal for each and every one of you is to have fun, feel comfortable experimenting with art supplies and artistic techniques, to ultimately leave this class excited to see the world through your renewed eyes as artists.
