This course will give you opportunities to explore art making in various mediums such as glass, paper mache, and found objects. This class can serve as a safe haven for you to ask questions, find community amongst your peers, and discover new ways to express yourself while challenging your creativity. Along with having fun, this course will introduce you to concepts of visual thinking: how to see the world from an artist’s point of view, how to develop your own creative solutions to design problems, and how to speak the language of art and design. We will work on projects that will bring out the craftsman in you, as you brainstorm big ideas and pay attention to details of your work. Various materials, some color theory, and art-making processes will be introduced to you in art class like no other you have taken before! Get ready to have some fun and challenge yourself in new ways.

Skill OneThis class meets twice a week. Class time will be spent working on projects individually with frequent group discussion about the process. Get to know those around you because you will be giving and gaining artistic feedback to and from them! We will complete one or two major projects per grading term, always followed by a class-wide critique. Much of this work can be completed during class time with smaller projects in support of the major project assigned. Due to budgetary constraints there is a $30 lab fee for this class.

GradingMost of this course’s work will be completed during class time, therefore, attendance and promptness to this class is critical to your success. Your grade is heavily weighed on your effort and thoughtfulness behind each process. I grade on your personal progress, care for the classroom and supplies, and kindness to your peers. I do not grade on pure ability. We are here to create a safe environment for exploration and discovery. My goal for each and every one of you is to have fun, experiment with and learn new things, and to leave this class excited to see the world through your renewed eyes as an artist.
